Remington Hot Springs (March 31-April 2, 2000) Trip Leader: Terry

Hounds enjoying Remington Hot Springs

Our first trip of 2000 took place over the weekend of March 31-April 2 at Remington Hot Springs along the Kern River in the Southern Sierra. Days were in the pleasant 70's, with nights in the low 50's. By late afternoon on Saturday, we had a total of 20 guys join us for this trip (not to mention the several who we introduced to our group while there).

Remington Hot Springs is on the Kern River just below Lake Isabella at an elevation of about 2,600 feet. The hike from the camping area to the hot springs is a steep quarter mile unmarked trail but was in good condition. There are now 2 new tubs along the river that can hold up to 15 people at a time thanks to a dedicated volunteer building-effort over the past winter as well as the 2 older tubs that have been there for years. The water temperature in the tubs varies from a hot 105 in the original tub to a much more relaxing 90's in the river tubs (which can be regulated). Of course, if you find it too warm, you can always take a swim in the Kern River! The beauty of this primitive wooded site must be seen to be appreciated.

This is an easy trip even for the unexperienced campers. Many of us drove into the town of Bodfish for meals (a distance of only 5 miles) while others cooked or barbequed at the campsite. It never seemed crowded and there was plenty to do for everyone. if you missed us this time, don't be sorry next time! Check our calendar for more hiking and camping events all year! We'll keep you busy!
